BonChon: A Chicken That's Hard to Resist

How can you make chicken irresistible? Simple. You just have to make it worth eating. And when you say that you have to make a chicken worth eating, it has to offer something new to the Filipino taste buds. It has to be uniquely exciting, especially for food lovers like us. So, have you ever heard of chicken that's twice fried? You might actually doubt the process, thinking that the chicken might get overcooked. Well, to tell you honestly, it's not. In fact, it actually makes the chicken healthier to eat, without cutting on the flavor. This is actually what Koreans do to their chicken.

Korean fried chicken is already becoming a big hit, not only in Korea, but in other parts of the globe as well. In the United States, for example, Korean fried chicken was actually voted the best chicken. Then came the success of the famous BonChon Chicken. Fortunately for us, we don't have to fly all the way to Korea or to the United States to taste this delectable dish. BonChon Chicken already has 2 branches here in the Philippines, and both are in Makati. We actually visited their Greenbelt branch to have a go at the delicious chicken people have been raving about. You might mistake BonChon Chicken for the oh-so-delicious Buffalo chicken wings, but they actually differ at some point. BonChon Chicken, like what we've said earlier, is twice fried chicken. The first fry is the frying process which removes the fat and makes the skin really crispy, while the second fry comes with the secret sauce. The result? Delicious Korean chicken wings that has less grease wrapped in a flavorful and crispy skin that you thought you could only find at Jollibee. BonChon chicken comes in two sauces, soy garlic and hot and spicy. As for the chicken part, they have chicken wings and drumsticks. Regardless which of the two sauces or which of the two chicken parts you choose, we guarantee that it will be very delicious. You may opt for the soy garlic sauce if you're not up for the spicy flavor of the hot and spicy sauce.

The branch at Greenbelt has a simple yet comfy ambiance. We believe the ambiance here is the same as the ambiance of the Ayala Triangle Gardens branch. The place is jam-packed during mealtime, so don't be surprised to find a lot of people when you eat there during lunch or dinner. They have long tables with diner-type stools for groups or barkadas. What you have to do here is basically what you do at fast food chains. You order your food at the counter and wait for your order to be served. Service could be a bit slow (probably because of the outpour of people during our visit), so be a bit patient because the food makes up for the waiting time. Simply put, BonChon Chicken wants to make you experience with them an enjoyable and a memorable one.

Here's a glimpse of the delicious Korean fried chicken:

(For the purpose of pricing, we will arrange it in a table-like manner so as to show the number of pieces each order consists. This is actually how it is shown at the menu at the counter. Orders don't include the 15 php rice and the 45 php drink. )

BonChon Chicken (choice of soy garlic sauce or hot and spicy sauce)

Small (Php 185)      Medium (Php 365)        Large (Php 720)
Chicken Wings              6 pieces                     12 pieces                      24 pieces
Drumsticks                     3 pieces                       6 pieces                      12 pieces
Chicken Combo                    -                 3 drumsticks, 6 wings   6 drumsticks, 12 wings

Glutton Guy: Glutton Girl and I ordered the Chicken Combo because we both wanted to taste the chicken wings and the drumsticks. We asked to have both the soy garlic and the hot and spicy sauce. Actually, both sauces were really good. I'm a big fan of spicy food, so the hot and spicy flavor of the sauce didn't really matter to me. The soy garlic sauce was equally delicious. The hot and spicy sauce really lived up to its name. Aside from my tall glass of iced tea, I think I had 3 more glasses of water because of this sauce. Nevertheless, it was really delicious. The soy garlic sauce was also good. It had that distinct flavor which I really liked. I actually couldn't tell which of the chicken was spicy and which had the soy garlic sauce by just looking at it. The sauces worked well with the perfectly cooked chicken. I liked the crunchiness of the skin. The chicken was tender and warm on the inside and was crunchy and flavorful on the outside. I had a hard time eating the chicken, though, because we were only given plastic utensils. I actually broke my spoon while I was eating my chicken. The chicken wings, for me, are a bit expensive, considering that the chicken wings don't consist of the whole wing part. However, with regards to the taste, the chicken wings were excellent. It actually is best eaten with your bare hands, if you ask me. : )

Glutton Girl: If I may, I would like to give my opinion by comparing the chicken to the chicken wings I have tried before. As compared to the Buffalo chicken wings, this is actually better. The chicken actually has more flavor and less oil. BonChon chicken actually has a crispier skin as compared to the Buffalo wings. The flavors are just perfect that it doesn't need any dip to intensify the flavors of the chicken. I liked both of the sauces. The hot and spicy was actually better for me since I like my chicken wings spicy. The drumsticks were also perfect with the spicy sauce. I think I had a drumstick and around 5 to 6 pieces of chicken wings. The plastic spoon and fork actually gave that feel that we were eating at a fast food place, though. Well, plastic utensils has its pros and cons. I would also suggest that BonChon chicken have budget meals. When we were there I saw that there were a lot of office people who were patronizing the store. If they had meals which already have rice and drinks, then it would be budget friendly and would really give that value for money. Nevertheless, the taste of the chicken is really exquisite. It really made me enjoy my visit there.

BonChon Chicken offers something new that people continue to patronize. The taste of the chicken is really one of a kind that one piece, or even two, or three, or four would not be enough. It truly satisfies its promise of serving delicious chicken wings and drumsticks that would appease your cravings. When you get to taste that chicken of theirs, your addiction for Korean fried chicken would definitely begin. It's safe to say that eating at BonChon Chicken would give you a different chicken experience.
